Hi there! My name is Celeste and I'm the founder of Tiny Hair Workshop. I thought I'd give you a little background into who I am and how I started this company!
I grew up in a small town in Upstate New York, and I moved to Northern California for college to study theater. If you had told me then that I would later become a hairstylist and start my own product line, I would have told you that you were nuts. I loved acting and was determined to make it my profession. However, once I finished university I realized what people mean by "struggling actor" - it's an incredibly tough profession to break into, and can be demoralizing as well.
My first film performance entered in a festival - it's not as fancy as you'd think
I'm a creative person and never saw myself sitting at a desk job. Following graduation, I set aside acting, knowing I could always come back to it later. I traveled, joined a punk band, and decided on a Plan B profession - to become a chef. I loved to cook, but I found that after a year of school that it just wasn't the right fit for me. Turning something I really enjoyed doing into a job made it a chore, and I began to view cooking as something that had to be done versus something I wanted to do.
Grilling outside our San Francisco apartment, 55 degrees
I was 28 and felt completely directionless. I had a degree in a "fluffy" major. I had been bartending to support myself. I was a cooking school dropout. Then, my closest friends jumped in with ideas. I had always been creative with my own hair - why didn't I go to cosmetology school? The more I thought about it, the more I realized I didn't have anything to lose.
My good friend Amber and I after getting our cosmetology licenses!
I completed cosmetology school amidst a year of many personal struggles. It was an incredibly difficult time but I loved school and was determined to get my license. Once I passed my test, I immediately got hired as an assistant at a local high-end salon. This was the start of an incredible journey!
Stay tuned for Part 2!
